Big solution for Smallgoods Plant

Illawarra Smallgoods is a third generation family business that has grown to become one of the largest suppliers of processed meats to delicatessens in the Illawarra region and Supermarkets around Australia.

With the business increasing, they needed to expand their premises in Fern Hill, Wollongong building additional storage and freezer capacity and in 2019 planned a substantial expansion and upgrade to their existing premises.

As some areas of the refrigeration warehousing requiring 24/7 temperatures of minus 18 degrees the 250-300mm floor slab needed a 500mm cavity underneath for ventilation and was designed to have both a top slab and bottom slab, with a 100mm thermal barrier sandwiched between.

Due to the limited height restrictions, propping was virtually impossible, so Truedek Steel Decking was chosen for the sub floor slab which allowed unpropped spans of up to the 5.2 metres required. Different Truedek panel heights helped with the different slab thicknesses and the 740m2 was completed in 2 stages in excellent time.

Total Construction was commissioned to undertake the building and sub-contracted formwork company ProForm Group for the steel fixing and concreting.
